The Great Deer Hunt Kicks Off Thursday!
MIAMI – The Great Deer Hunt returns Thursday, Oct. 28, with a flag-raising ceremony in downtown Miami.
The event – a joint project of the River Bottom Sportsmen for Disabled American Veterans and the Mid-America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America – is a muzzleloader deer hunt for disabled/paralyzed American veterans.
The Great Deer Hunt allows disabled American veterans an opportunity to enjoy a weekend of food, fun, and fellowship, as well as the thrill of the hunt.
It all kicks off at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, with the flag-raising ceremony and runs through Sunday, Oct, 31.
The hunt coincides with the fall muzzleloader season in Oklahoma and the annual flag-raising ceremony has grown into the official opening of the event. It features the raising of a garrison-style U.S. flag on the five-story building – now the home of The Cole Organization — at the corner of Central and Main streets in Miami.
“This is truly an emotional and inspirational ceremony,” said Jack Dalrymple, president of the River Bottom Sportsmen. “The way then community comes out and shows its support for our veterans is simply amazing. I encourage everyone to come out and experience this event first hand. Word cannot describe how beautiful it is to see that big flag go up that building while our national anthem is being played.”
The agenda for the flag-raising ceremony includes a traditional and Native American prayer, presentations by local and state officials and organizations and entertainment by students from Commerce and Miami.
This year, six veterans will participate in the hunt, according to Dalrymple. While the Thursday flag-raising ceremony and a banquet sponsored by Buffalo Run Casino and the Peoria Tribe that night officially welcome the participants to Miami, hunt activities begin early Friday morning.
