VIOLET, starring Sutton Foster, quickly became a Broadway favorite. Now, you can experience this multi-award-winning musical LIVE featuring a talented NEO cast. Tickets available at http://theatre.neo.edu/tickets/ Violet, a scarred woman, embarks on a cross-country bus trip to be healed by a minister. Along the way, she discovers the true meaning of beauty. Winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical when it premiered Off-Broadway in 1997, and then on to a Tony-nominated Broadway debut in 2014 with a revised version. Nominated for more than twenty major awards! Score composed by Tony winner Jeanine Tesori, of Thoroughly Modern Millie and Shrek fame. Violet is inspired by a short story from Doris Betts, author of Beasts of the Southern Wild. As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved she’s traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle—the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. On the way, she meets a young, African-American soldier whose love for her reaches far past her physical “imperfections.” The New York Times: “Violet integrates a number of styles, from gospel and bluegrass to Memphis blues . . . . Ms. Tesori has a fine hand for harmonies and counterpoint.” Charles Isherwood of Variety: “An enduringly rewarding musical. With its tangy flavors of country, gospel, blues and honky-tonk rock, it is also her warmest, most accessible score.” Original Broadway Cast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/violet-original-broadway-cast-recording/873243147 Music by JEANINE TESORI Lyrics and Book by BRIAN CRAWLEY Based on “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Doris Betts Music and vocal director, Dr. Tatiana Taylor.
